Kirby crew and their roles
I may have missed something. You can correct me if so.
I’ve seen some forum replys from time to time by Fabian, but I still don’t know much about him.
So, what is his role in the crew?
We are still working on an official team page and this post really shows how necessary it has become.
I apologize for not introducing @fabianmichael’s role better right from the start. The blog post turned pretty long and I thought it’s better to have a more general introduction for the entire team at a later point.
I asked Fabian to join the team, because he’s in my opinion a very talented designer and at the same time has serious programming skills.
We all wear multiple hats and for a project like Kirby, which grows very organically, I think there’s no other way to do it. I realised in the last two years that my own focus is shifting more and more away from being a designer/developer to a juggler My heart is still beating for design, but I don’t have much time to practice it anymore.
Thinking about the plans I have in mind for Kirby, Fabian is the obvious choice. He’s someone who can help me with features together with Lukas and Nico and at the same time he’s someone who can move Kirby forward visually.
So here’s my list of how I see our roles: (we pretty much all wear the “docs and community hats” to some extend, so I don’t mention them in my list)
@bastianallgeier - organisation, pro support, development, design
@lukasbestle - forum support, development
@texnixe - forum support, technical writing
@fabianmichael - design, development
@distantnative - development

Yes, for example. He is also working on a new starterkit.

And those plans is a secret as always…
@lukasbestle
Yes, for example. He is also working on a new starterkit.
Fortunately there are other crew members who do not hesitate to reveal all the secrets.
No, there is always more to it. It has to stay exciting, right?

One of the best “starterkits” out there is http://underscores.me/. It’s WordPress but it’s awesome.
Do your thing, but don’t do it less good than underscores and you will be fine! Good luck!
Maybe sometimes I really miss the humour, but your post and the replies sound pretty aggressive to me to be honest. I didn’t get the rather rude tone in your question about what Fabian is going to do in the first place. But I always try to stay friendly and write lengthy answers about decisions, concepts and the philosophy behind Kirby.
We/I don’t try to reveale too many plans because it always leaves people disappointed and puts too much unnecessary pressure onto everybody involved. It’s a hard learning after years of running stuff like Zootool and Kirby.
We always try to build something really great and useful and put our hearts and souls into it, but to be honest I’m fed up with comparisons to Wordpress or such stuff as “do it like underscores and you will be fine” There’s a huge team behind Wordpress and a budget that is so far beyond what we work with, that we don’t even consider it comparable. You mention Underscores and the first thing I see is a list of 100!!! contributors.
What we can offer is a very approachable small team and a product that doesn’t suffer from bloat. We try everything to keep it that way. If you want it to be more like Wordpress, I’m afraid we can’t help you and we don’t want to.
I really might miss the irony or anything else about those replies, but to be honest it’s not helping. It’s frustrating.

Please don’t go the Wordpress road. I finally found something that is compact, robust and with a very understandable (and expandable, for those who want / need that) core.
In fact: the ‘copy and paste the kirby / panel folder and your good to go’ mentality that is baked in Kirby’s core is what had me hooked on Kirby in the first place. It’s all small and not bloated and for a beginner PHP developer like me: very understandable.
I don’t need the CLI, don’t use Gulp (I use CodeKit and SourceTree instead, a GUI for technical things fits me better, I guess) but I’m glad that the learning curve to actually start with Kirby and play with it is kept as low as possible !
Keep up the good work and please understand that i’m a very happy Kirby developer (as with many others, I’m sure) that watches the new releases like a little kid in a candy shop

Can you give us any hints about the new Kirby Starterkit?
Will it be based on the current Starterkit or is it something entirely new?
Will it be released soon(…ish)?
Hints or no hints, I can’t wait to see it!
That’s still as secret as it can be … Think about this as Christmas, all the goodies well hidden … (only I don’t think you will have to wait that long)
Let’s say … it’s gonna be different

As Bastian wrote, we don’t want to promise too much. That just increases pressure and won’t help anybody.
It will be released when it’s done and it will be awesome.

I’m really sorry if I made you feel bad. I never intend to do that. Now I feel bad.
I didn’t get the rather rude tone in your question about what Fabian is going to do in the first place.
I don’t see the rude tone in my question but maybe I’m home blind (as we say in Sweden).
I do see that a question like this can be rude to ask. I should have waited on a more official announcement. I will try to hold my horses next time.
In fact, I’m quite jealous of @fabianmichael to get such honorable mission. So big congrats to you Fabian if I haven’t said it already!
You mention Underscores
I see now that I took the wrong approach of explaining what I had in my mind.
I should not have posted a link. Instead I should have presented idea directly. I will try one more time:
Included:
- Not too much CSS.
- Not too much JS.
- A controller
- A route
- A collection filter
- …
In this purposed starterkit there is one example of every bigger feature. It results in a nice boilerplate. In my world it’s perfect for new users to start with.
I see is a list of 100!!! contributors.
You and your 4-5 crew members (superheroes) have done better so far than a 100. Quality before quantity. It’s going to be great, whatever you intend to do!
I will try to show my appreciation more and try to get rid of my rude tone if possible. I just felt like I’ve learned something today.
Again, I’m really sorry! Can you forgive me?

I can’t speak for Jens, but our tone is often lost in translation when we don’t write in our own language. My Danish friends often come across as rude or taciturn when they write in English but it just reflects the structure of their native language (they also swear a lot). Dare I say Danish and Swedish are very close, without getting too much hate from Jens?
We all have turns of phrase that reveal our mother tongue. I believe I can spot French people just by the way they write in English

nothing needs to be forgiven, Jens
I was really hoping for a misunderstanding in the first place and it’s all fine with your kind reply. I sometimes even have issues to bring points across to my own wife when we text each other I guess it’s really in the nature of written text, to make it so much harder to understand what a person is really up to and as @Malvese already pointed out, different languages are not helping either. Emojis to the rescue
But it’s also a good reminder that we have to be careful keeping the general tone in the forum as awesome and friendly as it is. It’s really not that easy sometimes.
In this case, I already knew what Fabian has been working on in the last weeks and how much I like it already and maybe that’s why I got this all the wrong way.
Honestly Jens, I really appreciate your work for the community and for Kirby a lot! The plugin list by John and you is simply amazing and you are probably in the top five of the most active forum users of all time
So let’s just all be friends again and I’m pretty sure you are going to like what’s coming next
Cheers,
Bastian

I think you are right. That can be a part of it.
I just found what I think is a good example of where I can learn more from that.
One of my original post titles:
Kirby 2.4 wishlist - What do you want?
The same post title edited by @texnixe:
Kirby 2.4 wishlist - What would you like to see?
The @texnixe version is much better. It’s less rude and more telling what it’s all about.
About danish. I’m not into hate so you will not get any of that.
I think danish sounds like about 50% swedish but not much more than that. I can understand some danish if I listen really careful, but not all of the words. I don’t swear. I think that would be bad practice for my two kids.
@bastianallgeier
Emojis to the rescue
I’ve just looked into the emoji “archive” and from now on I’ll probably use them more.
In this case, I already knew what Fabian has been working on in the last weeks and how much I like it already and maybe that’s why I got this all the wrong way.
I didn’t know that. I now have a better understanding of your reaction.
Honestly Jens, I really appreciate your work for the community and for Kirby a lot!
It means a lot.
So let’s just all be friends again and I’m pretty sure you are going to like what’s coming next
Agree! I’m sure we will. Looking forward to it as always.
