The editors need a single-line text input with italics ability.
I suggested learning how to use italics in markdown, but they are asking for an italics button (madness!). Afaik that is not possible right?
Alternatively I could use a single-line textearea, I mean: where new lines could not be created. Is that possible?

No, a standard text field doesn’t have any inline buttons.
And no, there is no such thing as a single-line textarea, unless you provide custom validation so that multi-line text cannot be stored.
How about using the Editor with inline: true?
