Is it possible to insert linked images with the writer field? E.g.: <a href="xyz"><img src="/xyz.png"></a>

Yes and no. In theory, you can use the standard link and insert a path to a file in the url field, e.g. notes/himalaya-and-back/himalaya.jpg. But that’s not very comfortable.
An alternative would be a custom writer mark, based on one of these plugins:

with your suggested solution, the link would point to the image, what I need is that the image points to the link. for example to link instagram, twitter… logos with the profile of the user.
Oh, ok, but you can’t place images into the writer field anyway, so that wouldn’t make sense.
So just use an image block.
by image block do you mean use an image field for it and not try it with writer field ?
