These are not exclusive but can perfectly go together. For those licenses, that don’t qualify for a free upgrade, the pwyw slider will have a minimum amount. For those licenses that qualify, you can upgrade them for free, you can choose to pay something to further support the development of Kirby depending on the value it brings you, both totally valid and fully your choice.
The psychology behind this is so fascinating. I’m sure someone must have done some studies on this because it’s so interesting. Anyway, merry christmas
“here, since you bought this thing, grab a free sample of this other thing, it is free, to show you our gratitude… ooor you could pay for it if you wanted to support us, do you want to support us further? you can have it for free though, you deserve it, here, take it… or perhaps you want to support us… you don’t have to, it is free… but you can… do you want to?..”
Random question because this is very interesting: would it make a difference if it was a simple “click here to upgrade” button but a donate message was shown after your license was upgraded? Or you’d feel the same pressure?
Less pressure, but incongruous, “is this a paid product or a donation based project?”
I would add that this happens only because the relation I have with Kirby and its team feels ‘close enough’ as to wanting to be polite and respectful of their licensing model, thus: pressure.
I see. I never thought something like this could become problematic for others, human psychology is always interesting. Thank you for answering my questions! Appreciated.
Let me add a nugget of cultural difference to this: I am Catalan, but my couple is from the Basque Country, where we spend Christmas.
In Catalonia when you have dinner at a restaurant in a group, people tend to split the bill, and most restaurants allow for this, with some exceptions. In the Basque Country people customarily FIGHT over who will pay the bill (as in, people want to pay the bill, won’t let you pay), and most restaurants do NOT allow bill splitting. It is also common to do “poteo” with “la cuadrilla”, which means going from bar to bar having a drink and some “pintxos” in each of the bars, with a group of people that are usually close since school. Then, in each of these bars, one person goes to get drinks and pays all of them (some fighting over who, may ensue) and it is an unwritten social rule that there has to be a balance, so if you know you did not pay for a while, you fight to pay, haha. I am serious.
So, as a Catalan, I basically asked if I can really choose 0€ in the slider, while a basque would have probably just paid the recommended minimum
According to the numbers, a majority of 75% of customers chose to set the slider to 0, and an even higher percentage of 80+% when updating to a free Kirby Enterprise - Gratitude Upgrade.
I am confused as to what a ‘Gratitude Upgrade’ is. Would that be upgrading a license that has not been activated before Jan1, 2023?
According to this, All Kirby 3 licenses not activated before Jan 1, 2023 can be upgraded to the new licensing model for free. (...) For everyone else, we offer an attractive upgrade price, no matter if you have a license for Kirby 1, Kirby 2 or Kirby 3.
BUT no matter if activated or not, if I try to upgrade a license it shows me the same slider and recommended price. While it seems fair to upgrade an inactive license for free, I wouldn’t dare to do the same with an already activated license.
For an activated K3 license purchased before January 1, 2023, the slider shows a recommended price of 59 Euros and you can move the slider down to 39 if you wish. The upgrade is not free in this case, but comes at a considerable discount compared to a new license.
For a K3 license bought before January 1, 2023 that has not been activated yet, the upgrade is free if you want it to be free (i.e. you can move the slider down to 0 if you wish).
K3 licenses bought after January 1, 2023 are a free upgrade no matter if activated or not (slider can be moved to 0, shows a suggestion of 39 euros)
That does check, this is an activated license bought 21.04.2021, and so it allows me to upgrade it for free as you stated.
But this information you are giving me here is NOT what is stated on the license upgrade guide section, where it clearly says that All Kirby 3 licenses not activated before Jan 1, 2023 can be upgraded to the new licensing model for free. without mention to when where they bought, or anything else.
