How do I stop the numbers selection section showing (for navigation) when I want to change the status of a page to public so that they are not added to the navigation.

If you want to publish a page, you have two options: listed and unlisted. Unlisted pages don’t get any sorting number.
Listed pages can have either numbers prepended (default), or a leading 0 for alphabetic sorting or a date for date based sorting.
So to not have any numbering scheme, make them unlisted instead of listed.
