Best solution to handle search on big sites

I’m currently doing some maintanance on a fairly big site. Searching though all the content, as always, is an issue because it gets progressively slower.

I remember giving the @distantnative plugin a try a year or so ago but I see that it’s no longer maintained.

So my question is what’s the current best solution? I already consided Algolia but i’d love to avoid a 3rd party service for this.

Im aware scripts like Lunr https://lunrjs.com/ that can do this but not used them personally. Might be worth looking into.

is algolia but seems quiet easy to setup
