Media folder few times grater than content - how to keep it tidy?

Hi,

my recently deployed K4 website content total weight is circa 230mb, but media folder of it is several times greater (circa 950MB, to be exact) – which is (1) eating my storage quota as well as (2) freaking me a bit.

So, Dear Folks, two questions:

  1. is it normal K4 behaviour?
  2. do you have any suggestions to keep media folder as tiny as possible?

Yes, it is to be expected that the media folder is larger than your content files. The media folder contains copies of your original files as well as all the thumbs, plus assets from plugins etc.

Kirby usually removes file copies and their thumbs from the media folder if a file is replaced or deleted, so there shouldn’t really be a need to clean up that folder manually, unless you often remove stuff from your content folder manually.

Having said that, think of the media folder as a cache folder; you can delete it from time to time if you want to, and all files that Kirby needs will be regenerated.

Storage quota shouldn’t be an issue these days, unless you use gigantic files or video.
