Htaccess not setting directory index as index.php

I have used amazon ec2 to host my website and uploaded all my Kirby files including .htaccess. I also added an index.html as a test so I could see if index.php was actually the root. The files are there and I can view index.php and .htaccess. Is the issue here with the .htaccess file or permissions maybe?

I need to install the PHP package on my ec2 instance.
