it is not an infinite loop with the update hook calling itself but somewhere in the validation process.

Right, in the issue posted above, there isn’t even a hook involved.

I am wondering why the page is so slow in general.

Sounds like the discussed page update hook was a symptom but not the problem. The reason for the long loading/updating/saving times causes the max execution time fatal error. You should investigate that problem instead.
