I saw this message in the Presets Guide …
Do not use presets for new projects. Presets will be deprecated in future versions of Kirby.
If presets are to be deprecated, what should we use in their place? For example how should one show an overview of subpages in the panel, like described here? Pages | Kirby CMS
With columns and sections, see site.yml of the Starterkit or in fact all parent page blueprints in the Starterkit.

Why are presets being dropped?
Because people keep running into issues as soon as they want to extend them. Then more often than not, you have to use sections anyway, so better start with sections right from the beginning. It’s also more confusing if there are different ways to do the same
Makes sense I guess. Do you have an idea by when they will be totally dropped?
I think we will first deprecate them, probably in 3.7, and then remove them in 3.8. The warning in the guide is there so that people starting new projects won’t start them using those presets.
